National History

On February 21, 1987, Irene Montoya, Cynthia Garza, Nellie Flores, and Melissa Montoya came up with the idea of creating a sorority that would help unify and promote leadership among Hispanic women at Texas Tech University. The quest began when Irene, Cynthia, Nellie, and Melissa asked Marlene Hernandez, Assistant Director of New Student Relations, to be their faculty advisor. She immediately agreed. They then met with Mary Reeves, a student organizations advisor, who advised them on the procedures necessary to establish the sorority as an official organization on campus. After completing the necessary paperwork and choosing the name "Kappa Delta Chi" for their sorority, the young women wrote a constitution incorporating the ideals of love, friendship, and Christian virtues. The newly formed offices of President, Secretary, and Treasurer were filled by Cynthia Garza, Melissa Montoya, and Nellie Flores, respectively. On April 6, 1987, Kappa Delta Chi became an officially recognized student organization of Texas Tech University

Pi Chapter History

The history of Kappa Delta Chi - Pi begins in the fall of 1997 with nine young women who felt the absence of an important aspect of college life.  After three years of studying engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, and attending numerous campus organization meetings, Melissa Eureste knew what she was missing in her life was not to be found on campus.  After extensive research over the Christmas holidays, Melissa discovered Kappa Delta Chi over the internet.

What made Kappa Delta Chi stand apart from all other sororities was the emphasis on serving the community and upholding the principles of Unity, Honesty, Integrity, and Leadership while providing a support system. Initially, Melissa approached Angela Cardenas a fellow engineering student and explained the need of such a sisterhood at the University.  At the start of Spring Semester 1998 the plans of bringing something great to the largest University in the nation began.  Melissa and Angela searched for other women at UT with the same desire of making a difference in the community- close friends of each young women were approached and the Charter Class was formed.  Judith Aleman, Evelyn Boyajian, Angela Cardenas, Cristiana del Pozo, Melissa Eureste, Leslie Garza, Roxanne Mendez, Rubi Medina, and Jennifer Sanchez met for the first time on February 22 at an informal meeting at Melissa's apartment to discuss the mission at hand.

After much discussion the nine women agreed to give their dedication to chartering a new chapter of Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Incorporated. After initial contact with Claudia Balderas the National External Vice President, the nine women met again for their first official meeting on February 26 1998 at the SSB to begin and discuss the process.   A letter of intent was signed and submitted on March 13, 1998 professing their commitment to the ideal on which Kappa Delta Chi is based.  The initial advisors for the interest group were:  Dr. Ricardo Romo, Vice Provost at UT and Sonia Konradi, Director  of Corporate Relations and Engineering Co-Op.  After much hard work from each of these nine women UT officially recognized the interest group on April 20, 1998. After months of regular meetings the Kappa Delta Chi National Executive Board officially recognized the nine women as the Pi Colony on May 7, 1998.

The Executive Board of the Pi Colony was formed from the Charter Class as follows:

Best New Member was awarded to Melissa Eureste and Most Service Hours was awarded to Roxanne Mendez.
